Estonian personal care ingredient maker ÄIO has received a government grant of around €2m to the improve the production techniques of its fermentation-derived oils and fats.

The Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications grant is funding a project to create an integrated digital biomanufacturing platform capable of turning local food and wood industry side-streams into high-value ingredients for cosmetics and other consumer products.

The DigiFoundry 2.0 (DF2.0) project will combine improved fermentation, automation, digitalisation and advanced biotechnology to make the production of fermentation-derived oils and fats more efficient, scalable and cost-competitive.

DF2.0 builds on the results of the original DigiFoundry project, a collaboration between ÄIO and Estonian applied research organisation TFTAK ran from 2023 to 2026.

The first project focused on producing specialised fats through precision fermentation, including pilot-scale precision fermentation, sensory analysis, and techno-economic assessment of the production process.

The new project takes this work to the next level by connecting biological development with improved fermentation, automation, and digital process control.

“DF2.0 is about turning side-streams into the oils of tomorrow,” said Professor Petri-Jaan Lahtvee, co-founder and COO of ÄIO.

“With digitalisation and automation, we can make that transformation faster, smarter, and more competitive and build a new generation of ingredients produced locally from resources we already have.”

The DF2.0 project will run until 30 June 2029.
